Can You Drink the Water in the Dominican Republic? A Cap Cana Answer for Belara Buyers

Published October 29, 2026 7 min read

Belara is being built in Green Village, inside Cap Cana, a gated destination that runs its own water company instead of depending on a town utility. Buyers often assume that settles the matter. On paper it does not: no water-quality results for Cap Cana's taps have been published, and the CDC's advice for the whole country is still to drink purified, bottled water. This guide takes the question from Belara's own address: what Cap Cana says about its supply, what to ask the developer before handover in Q4 2029, how to pick a bottled-water supplier, which vaccines the CDC mentions, and what to do if a stomach bug arrives anyway.

Does living inside Cap Cana change the answer?

In one respect, yes: the water reaching a Cap Cana home has a single, known operator. ACUATUR, the destination's water company, manages the whole urban water cycle, from abstraction and treatment to drinking-water standard through to sanitation, wastewater treatment and reuse. Cap Cana's own published material, carried as branded content in a business magazine in March 2026, says the water is drawn from an intake about 8 miles from the coast, that the network is designed to distribute by gravity, that new wells are kept under permanent monitoring, and that 100% of treated wastewater is reused to irrigate the Punta Espada and Las Iguanas golf courses.

What that material does not contain is a test result. No independent water-quality report for Cap Cana's taps has been published, and a promotional article is not one. So the honest position is a narrow one: the supply inside Cap Cana is organised differently from much of the coast, but nothing public allows this page to tell you the tap is fit to drink. The CDC's 2026 guidance for the Dominican Republic is to drink only purified, bottled water, and until Cap Cana publishes figures, that is the standard to keep at Belara as anywhere else in the country.

What should a Belara buyer ask before handover?

Belara is planned as 59 residences on 5 levels, with delivery set for Q4 2029, and the residences come with appliances and VRF air conditioning rather than furniture. The developer has not published how the building will receive, store or treat its water, and this page does not guess. That leaves a short list of questions worth putting in writing before the keys change hands.

First, who supplies the residence, and in whose name the water account and the connection will be; inside Cap Cana the answer is likely to involve the destination's water company, but confirm it at handover. Second, whether the building holds water in a tank or cistern before it reaches the apartments, and who cleans and inspects it, and how often. Third, whether any filtration is planned, for the whole building or under the kitchen sink. Fourth, what happens to supply during a power cut. Whatever the replies, design the kitchen on the assumption that the tap is for washing: keep counter space for a water dispenser and room in the pantry for spare 5-gallon jugs.

How do you choose a bottled water you can trust?

Bottled water is only as good as the plant that fills it, and the Dominican market is crowded. In October 2024 Diario Libre reported health ministry data showing about 194 water-bottling companies holding a sanitary registration, while the head of the purified-water processors' association estimated that more than 2,000 operate nationwide. Enforcement does happen: in 2017 the ministry reported closing at least 56 bottling plants that worked without registration, in unhygienic conditions or outside labelling and manufacturing rules.

Storage matters as much as origin. Since 2024 Pro Consumidor, the consumer-protection agency, has required shops to keep 5-gallon jugs out of direct sun, and it has seized jugs left outside. For a Belara household that suggests a few habits: buy established brands from supermarkets or distributors that keep their stock indoors, refuse any jug whose seal is broken or missing, and at home store full jugs in a cool cupboard rather than on a sunny terrace. If a property manager or a guest orders the water, hand them the same rules.

Which vaccines does the CDC mention, and why do they matter here?

Drinking water is also a health-planning question, because some infections reach people through food and drink, not only through a tap. In its 2026 chapter on the Dominican Republic, the CDC advises that travelers be vaccinated against hepatitis A, and against typhoid fever, especially those visiting friends or relatives. Neither recommendation depends on where you stay, so it applies to an owner at Belara exactly as it does to a hotel guest.

The CDC writes for travelers, and an owner who expects to spend months of the year in Cap Cana sits somewhere between a visitor and a resident. That is a reason to book a proper appointment with your own doctor or a travel clinic before the first long stay, bring your vaccination record, and let them decide what you need. A web page, this one included, is not the right place to settle it.

What if a stomach bug strikes anyway?

Even careful visitors get caught out, and the CDC names travelers' diarrhea as the most common health problem for visitors to the Dominican Republic. Its 2026 guidance on the condition is reassuring about time: untreated, bacterial diarrhea usually lasts 3 to 7 days and viral diarrhea generally 2 to 3. The priority is fluid. Oral rehydration solution is made by adding 1 packet to the stated volume of boiled or treated water, so a few sachets in a bathroom drawer at Belara are worth more than any remedy bought in a hurry. For children, the CDC calls rehydration solution the main treatment.

Two cautions come from the same guidance. Anti-diarrhea tablets on their own are not recommended when there is blood in the stool or a fever, and those are the signs to see a doctor rather than wait. Bismuth subsalicylate cut cases by about 50% in studies, but the CDC does not generally recommend it for children under 12 or pregnant women, or for people with an aspirin allergy or on blood thinners. Ask your doctor before relying on any of it.

Common questions

Is the tap water in Cap Cana safe to drink?
No water-quality results for Cap Cana's taps have been published, so this page cannot say. Cap Cana runs its own water company, but the CDC's 2026 advice for the Dominican Republic is to drink only purified, bottled water.
Who supplies water to homes in Cap Cana?
ACUATUR, Cap Cana's own water company, which manages abstraction, treatment, sanitation and the reuse of treated wastewater. Belara buyers should confirm the supply account at handover.
Which vaccines are advised before visiting the Dominican Republic?
The CDC advises travelers to be vaccinated against hepatitis A, and against typhoid, especially when visiting friends or relatives. Ask your own doctor or a travel clinic before the trip.
How long does travelers' diarrhea last?
According to the CDC, untreated bacterial diarrhea usually lasts 3 to 7 days and viral diarrhea 2 to 3 days. Rehydrate with oral rehydration solution, and see a doctor if there is fever or blood.
Will Belara residences have filtered water?
The developer has not published the building's water storage or treatment. Ask in writing before handover in Q4 2029, and plan the kitchen with space for a bottled-water dispenser.
